Kate Middleton gets garland from topless tribeswoman, views topless sculpture in Solomon Islands as royals take legal action over revealing photos

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are welcomed to Marau, Solomon Islands before they travel by boat to Tavanipupu, as part of the Royal couple's Diamond Jubilee Tour of South East Asia

As her lawyer went to court Monday to stop the publication of topless photo of her from spreading, Kate Middleton got an eyeful from Solomon Islands women accustomed to letting it all hang out.

A royal lawyer argued in a Paris court that the partially nude pictures breached a “highly intimate moment” for the future king and queen of England.

But on the opposite side of the world, the Duchess of Cambridge did her best to maintain her composure while negotiating a highly awkward moment.

Middleton and Prince William were welcomed to the village of Marau by a group of topless women, draped in the island’s traditional garb, who presented the couple with garlands to wear during their visit.

The move seemed to amuse the Duchess, who laughed and covered her face as the situation must have hit close to home.

She later was caught with her eyebrows raised and lips pursed as she came face to face with a topless sculpture in Honiora, seemingly trying to contain gut-busting laugh in the wake of the scandal that has swept Europe.

In the clash of cultures, Middleton didn’t seem to mind the topless islanders while her lawyer made the case of why surreptitiously nudie photos of her do not belong in the public domain.

Royal lawyer Aurelien Hamelle sought a court injunction banning republication or resale of photos of Middleton topless bathing in the south of France.

Prince William and Kate officially took legal action over her topless photos on Monday.

Hamelle argued the photos were taken “in a highly intimate moment during a scene of married life and have no place on the cover of a magazine.”

He drew parallels to the fatal 1997 Paris crash that killed Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana, Hamelle pleaded with a judge to take the profit out of the paparazzi madness.

The court is expected to release its’ decision Tuesday.

Britain's Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge listen to a village chief deliver a speech after their arrival in Marapa Island, Solomon Islands.

The French magazine Closer ignited the firestorm by publishing the topless shots on Friday and its Italian sister publication Chi ran a 26-page spread of the royal mammaries Monday under the headline “The Queen is Naked.”

“Since Kate is not exactly Alice in Wonderland, she should have expected this,” Chi editor Alfonso Signorini told Italian paper Corriere della Sera on Monday. “If I had had more scandalous photos I would have willingly published them.”

Closer to Britain’s back yard, Michael O’Kane, editor of the Irish Daily Star, was suspended Monday over the paper’s publication of the pictures.

Kate Middleton meets a young well-wisher as she attends a Women's Reception at the Leaf House, Commonwealth Youth South Pacific Centre on day 7 of their Diamond Jubilee Tour.

While the Star’s British co-owner threatened to shut down the newspaper entirely, O’Kane said he didn’t see what the big deal was.

“I did this as a service to our readers,” O’Kane told the BBC. “I’m a little taken aback by the reaction in the UK. It only seems to be an issue in the UK because she is your future queen. But from our point of view in Ireland, Kate Middleton is just another of the fantastic line of celebrities.”

But spokesman from Clarence House — the official residents of the Prince Williams father Prince Charles — made it clear what the big deal is.

“The complaint concerns the taking of photographs of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge whilst on holiday and the publication of those photographs in breach of their privacy,” the spokesman said.

Morning Caffeinated! -- Wii U, Black Mesa, and deadline day

Good morning, Shack. It's the end of another week, and it is ending on somewhat of a high note. The Wii U launch date and price were announced yesterday and, unless you slept the day away, you were probably inundated with stories and features about Nintendo's new console (staying with Shacknews first, I hope).

Nintendo Land may have an attraction
Aside from Bayonetta 2 and The Wonderful 101, I'm not sure there is anything I'm even remotely interested in at a $300 price point. I'm surprised that, after the success of the Wii as a family-based unit, Nintendo is apparently not sticking with its family theme. That price hits families a lot harder as a home entertainment system, but as gamers, we expect systems to take a chunk out of our wallets. I guess Nintendo wants to focus on its core, since families on budgets will be less inclined to splurge on a vanity item such as the Wii U at that price.

It will be interesting to see how the console does when it launches on November 18 in time for Black Friday. We'll know if things like Nintendo Land and Nintendo TVii are enough to tease families into dropping the cash for a gift that not everyone may want to use. Andrew pointed out to me that Nintendo has always been one for the gimmicks. Some succeed (Wii, DS), and some don't (GameCube, Virtual Boy). Which one will this be?

* * * * *

Today is deadline day for many projects we have been tracking. First, Black Mesa finally launched at 8:47 a.m. Mountain Time (the time the original Half-Life started for the uneducated), and is one of the first projects to get the Steam Greenlight from fans. (We have the download, by the way.)

Also facing a deadline today is Planetary Annihilation, although the only mystery now is whether the 42,000-plus people that donated will come up with their pledges for the game. Uber Entertainment's project hit every one of its stretch goals, fueled by a late surge of pledges to see Galactic War and a full symphony musical score added to the game. And as a bit of icing on the cake, Uber hit its last goal of $2.1 million--with six hours to go--to make a full documentary chronicling the game's development.
Cheers for Black Mesa and Planetary Annihilation

Finally, Obsidian has used its web site to tease their upcoming RPG with vague quotes and cryptic references over the last four days, and it seems the general consensus from fans is that this could be a Planescape: Torment game entitled Eternity. There have also been clues that it could be a Kickstarter project. We'll know for sure when the official announcement is made at noon PT (if their countdown holds true). I'd rather have a new PlaneScape game than Dungeon Siege 4, if I had to choose.

* * * * *

Random bits & Quick hits: Bethesda and Ubisoft continue to push Dishonored and Assassin's Creed 3 very hard as release dates approach for both games. I've found the developer documentaries really interesting, but I know they weren't aimed at me since I had already planned on playing both games ... If you haven't entered our Firefall founders giveaway yet, you still have time until Sunday night. Remember to follow the rules ... Blizzard is hopping into the "way-back" machine for the next Diablo 3 patch, with features spawned from Diablo 2. I'm still not going back, though.

Flashback: All this talk about Wii U got me thinking about the original Wii and playing with my kids. My son would beat me in Wii Sports bowling, but I could beat him and my daughter in Boom Blox. The Wii really was a good family console.

iPhone 5 release pre-orders: (AAPL) Apple says iPhone 5 preorders topped 2 million in 24 hours

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple says iPhone 5 preorders topped 2 million in 24 hours, more than double the amount of iPhone 4S preorders.

The company also says that while most preorders will be delivered on Friday, demand for the iPhone 5 exceeds the initial supply, so some of the devices are scheduled for delivery in October.

The iPhone 5 has a bigger screen — 4 inches (10.16 centimeters) measured diagonally — that creates room for another row of icons and lets widescreen movies fit better. The calendar will now show five days at a time instead of just three. Previous iPhone models carried 3.5-inch (8.89-centimeter) screens.

The iPhone 5 sells for $199 for the 16 gigabyte model, $299 for the 32 GB or $399 for the 64 GB model.

Apple says the iPhone 5 will be available at its 356 U.S. stores starting on Friday. Each customer that makes a purchase at a store will be offered free personal setup service, which will help them customize their device.

Aside from Apple stores, the iPhone 5 will be available at Apple's website as well as through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, some Best Buy, RadioShack, Target and Walmart stores and certain Apple authorized resellers.

Earlier Monday AT&T Inc. said it set a sales record for the iPhone 5, with customers ordering more of them than any previous iPhone model on the first day of preorders and over the weekend.

Apple Inc. says the iPhone 5 will be available in more than 22 countries on Sept. 28.

The Cupertino, Calif. company's stock added $7.56 to $698.84 as of 15 minutes before the market open on Monday.

Kate Middleton topless photos published in Closer and Chi magazines causing royal anger

CNN) -- Just weeks after the scandal about pictures of Britain's Prince Harry naked in Las Vegas, a magazine has sparked fresh controversy by publishing pictures of Prince William's wife, Catherine, topless while vacationing.

The duchess of Cambridge is "upset" with the magazine -- a French publication called Closer, a royal source told CNN. Palace officials, threatening legal action, have blasted what they call a "grotesque" invasion of privacy.

Chi, a glossy Italian gossip magazine, also published topless photos.

The grainy pictures appear to have been taken with a long camera lens while the couple was staying at a private chateau in Provence, in southern France.

They were "hugely saddened to learn that a French publication and a photographer have invaded their privacy in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner," a St. James's Palace spokesman said.

These new privacy controversies have dredged up the royal family's often rocky relationship with the press and put a spotlight on how the palace deals with the media after the tragic death of William's mother, Diana, as she fled photographers in Paris 15 years ago.

"The incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting to The Duke and Duchess for being so," the palace spokesman said.

"Their Royal Highnesses had every expectation of privacy in the remote house. It is unthinkable that anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish them."

St. James's Palace officials told CNN they "believe a red line has been crossed." The palace confirmed that the couple is taking legal action against the publishers of Closer.

The pair remain focused on their Asian tour on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, he added.

William, who is second in line to the throne, and his wife are in Malaysia as they carry out a nine-day Southeast Asian tour of Commonwealth nations, which started in Singapore.

The photographs cannot be accessed on Closer's website, which shows only the magazine's front cover with heavily blurred images. The photos are featured in the magazine's print copy, which is available in France.

The latest furor comes three weeks after the British royal family was caught up in a media furor over images of William's younger brother, Prince Harry, partying naked in his Las Vegas hotel room with a group of girls.

Those photographs were widely circulated online but were published in only one UK tabloid, The Sun, after palace officials asked UK media not to run them. The Press Complaints Commission, the UK press watchdog, received about 3,800 complaints from the public but said it was inappropriate for it to take any action without a formal complaint from the palace.

The Sun has made clear that it won't publish the pictures of Catherine, however. Editor Dominic Mohan tweeted: "The Sun has no intention of breaching the royal couple's privacy. The circumstances are very different to those relating to the photos of Prince Harry in Las Vegas."

Laurence Pieau, editor-in-chief of Closer in France, posted several comments on Twitter late Thursday promoting the release of the topless pictures of Catherine.

One said: "The world exclusive of #closer tomorrow is Kate Middleton as you have never seen her ... and as you will never see her again."

Another read: "For kate middleton to have tan lines she would have to be wearing a swimsuit!"

Interviewed by CNN affiliate BFM-TV on Friday, Pieau defended the decision to publish the photographs, saying, "We were just doing our job."

The magazine was tipped off about the dates of the royal couple's visit to Provence and sent a photographer, she said. The pair were visible on a terrace from the road.

Pieau said that there had been no debate at the magazine over whether to publish the photos and that she believes they are not degrading, as "they are just like any other couple in love."

She described the reaction to the pictures' publication as "disproportionate" and slammed the British press as "complete hypocrites," since photos of Harry naked were published by The Sun.

Pieau said that there are additional photos that are even more revealing but that Closer is not publishing them for now. The magazine will wait to see if any complaint is made against it, she said.

"I think that what these photos really highlight is the issue of the royal couple's security," she added.

A string of negative comments from members of the public has already been posted on the French Closer magazine's Facebook page.

One, written in French, said: "Your behavior is unacceptable, you're as bad as the English tabloids. You have gone too far with the photos of Kate topless and it will cost you a lot I hope. Shameful."

It is not yet clear what form any legal action by William and Catherine against Closer magazine, run by an Italian business called Mondadori, might take.

But British lawyer Charlotte Harris said the magazine's decision to publish

was a clear breach of French legal codes and was out of line with current views on people's right to privacy.

"The perception of the French was that they are less aggressive, that they have a culturally different opinion of where privacy laws should lie. Here they appear to have gone right over the other way," she said.

French law provides for " draconian sanctions" to protect against this kind of behavior, she said, including orders to take magazines off shelves and the imposition of serious fines.

But even if distribution of the images is contained, Harris said, the damage is done to the extent that very private information about the duchess has now become public knowledge.

French magazine VSD was fined 2,000 euros ($2,580) last week after it published a photo of Valerie Trierweiler, partner of French President Francois Hollande, in a bikini on its front cover, BFM-TV reports.

Trierweiler is also taking legal action against other French magazines that published images of her and Hollande in swimwear while on vacation, BFM-TV says.

The latest royal controversy threatens to overshadow what has until now been a well-received tour in Asia, undertaken as part of diamond jubilee celebrations for the queen, William's grandmother.

The duchess of Cambridge gave her first public speech in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Thursday, at a hospice for terminally ill children and adults. She is the patron of a charity supporting children's hospices in East Anglia, England.

The royal couple will be in Malaysia until Sunday before heading to the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu.

The duchess was very conservatively dressed as she visited a mosque in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

There was also a security scare when a man lunged at Catherine and tried to give her a flower as she and William left a festival of Malaysian dancing in a park in the capital.

A man was arrested over the incident, a palace source said.

"The Duchess was getting into the car and the Duke was walking round to the other side of the car when an enthusiastic member of the public tried to give her a flower," he told CNN.

"He was very close, right up against the car. He was arrested by local police officers. Royal protection officers were not involved, though they had noticed him in the crowd earlier on. The Duke and Duchess were not in any danger at all at any point."

The French Closer magazine is run by a different company from the publication of the same name in the United Kingdom.

Closer UK, published by Bauer Consumer Media, issued a statement distancing itself from the French magazine.

"Closer magazine UK would like to make it clear that the two publications make entirely independent editorial decisions. In this respect the comments made by the editor of the French edition which have reported in the media today do not reflect the opinions of Closer magazine UK.

"Closer magazine UK was not offered any pictures of this nature and certainly has no intention of publishing the photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge which have been published in France this morning."

The British media is under close scrutiny after revelations of phone hacking and other abuses. The conclusions of an independent judge-led inquiry, which may recommend greater restrictions on media freedoms, are expected by the end of the year.

CNN's Atika Shubert and Saskya Vandoorne contributed to this report.

UKG ONLINE 2012: Cara mengoperasikan software UKG online

Silahkan ikut tryout jika anda ingin mencobanya. Google to charge companies for product search listings

The price comparison service also states delivery
times and other users' ratings of listed retailer

Google is to start charging for listing products in its Product Search service. From autumn, only retailers who have paid a fee will appear.

For the past 10 years the price comparisnn service's results were based soley on relevance.

It drives traffic worth about $1.3bn (£849m) in annual sales globally, according to e-commerce consultants Channeladvisor.

The move has the potential to generate new profits for the US firm.

"We believe that having a commercial relationship with merchants will encourage them to keep their product information fresh and up to date," said Sameer Samat, vice president of product management for Google Shopping in a blogpost.

"Higher quality data - whether it's accurate prices, the latest offers or product availability - should mean better shopping results for users, which in turn should create higher quality traffic for merchants."

The service, which will be renamed Google Shopping, is available by clicking "more" on the search site's toolbar.

Additional costs
Martin Gill, principal analyst with Forrester Research, said Google Product Search had been a popular way to drive traffic to websites without incurring extra costs.

"Consumers are more likely to search for a product in a search engine than directly on a company website," he said.

"These changes add another layer of complexity to online advertising."

Amazon and eBay are among companies that have profited from traffic driven by Google's price comparison lists and now face fees if they want to continue appearing.

The changes may come under close scrutiny by the European Commission, further complicating an ongoing investigation into whether Google has abused its dominant market position.

"If Google is transparent to consumers about the new sponsored results and promoted search results, they have a better chance of securing a settlement in the antitrust investigation" said Mr Gill.

INDUSTRI KEHUTANAN: HTR Menggiurkan

Direktur Bina Perhutanan Sosial Haryadi Himawan menuturkan*industri pengolahan kayu berbasis hutan alam mengalami kekurangan bahan baku.

Hanya saja, hingga kini sistem pemanenan belum mempertimbangkan aspek kelestarian.(msb)

(sut)

Facebook stock plummets on second day of trading

After Facebook stock narrowly stayed above the initial public offering price during its first day of trading, the price fell hard and fast Monday, knocking more than 10 percent off the company's record-breaking initial valuation.

Facebook executed its highly anticipated IPO Thursday evening, pricing shares at $38 for total proceeds of $16 billion at a record valuation of $104 billion. Predictions of a big first-day increase in the stock price were rampant, but they fizzled Friday, as shares opened at $42 and almost immediately fell, staying below that mark for the rest of the session.

Shares finished Friday at $38.23, 0.6 percent higher than the price
investors paid for IPO stock. Friday reports said the banks that underwrote Facebook's IPO stepped in to buy stock when shares dipped near $38 on the first day of trading in order to ensure the stock closed above that level.

Without the help of the IPO underwriters, Facebook shares opened Monday at $36.53, but that price immediately dropped to below $36; in the first 30 minutes of trading, shares sold for as low as $33, a decrease of 13.7 percent from Friday's closing price. Facebook stock closed at $34.03, 11 percent off Friday's closing price and more than 10 percent lower than the price investors paid for IPO shares.

Confounding those bullish on Facebook stock even more was Wall Street's overall strength Monday: All three
Advertisement
major U.S. stock indexes rose at least 1.1 percent, led by the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index at 2.5 percent.

Other social media stocks were mixed Monday after steep falls at the end of last week. LinkedIn, Yelp and Zynga all plunged for the third consecutive day early in Monday's session, but Yelp bounced back from its lowest closing price ever with a solid gain of 3.5 percent. Mountain View professional-networking site LinkedIn experienced an up-and-down trading day, falling by as much as 6.8 percent and rising by as much as 1.4 percent; at the close, it had declined 2.2 percent.

Facebook partner Zynga had a horrible day Friday, when trading had to be halted twice due to sharp drops and the stock closed at all-time low of $7.16. The stock reached an all-time intraday low of $6.36 Monday morning after a sudden decrease of 11.2 percent, but the San Francisco social-gaming company's shares bounced back to close at $7.09, a decrease of 1 percent.

Facebook was founded in a Harvard dorm room by CEO Mark Zuckerberg and college classmates in 2004, and has grown to 900 million users in just nine years. However, analysts and investors are concerned that its popularity may not lead to strong revenues, as the company had only $3.7 billion in sales last year and has struggled to determine how to monetize its popularity on mobile devices.

"Investors are increasingly aware of the risk embedded in the stock price. There are real concerns about growth and advertisers' frequent lack of certainty how best to use Facebook, along with rising costs and ongoing acquisition risk," Pivotal Research Group Brian Wieser told Reuters. Wieser has a $30 price target on the stock.

Mark Siegel, an investor with Menlo Ventures, said that Facebook's failure to obtain a big initial pop in the stock price was a good thing for the company's long-term goals, however.

"I'm kind of glad there wasn't a big pop. Had this thing traded up 50 percent, it would just make the bar that much higher in terms of what the company has to deliver in revenues to avoid disappointing investors," he said.

Messenger mission reveals surprises on — and inside — Mercury

The smallest planet in the solar system keeps serving up big surprises. Scientists working on the Messenger mission to Mercury have found that the planet has unexpected inner layers and craters with tilted bottoms, and it may have been geologically active far later into its life than previously imagined.

In the first of two studies released Wednesday by the journal Science, a team led by MIT geophysicist Maria Zuber scanned the surface of Mercury's northern hemisphere and found the planet's surface to be unusually flat when compared with the terrain of the moon or Mars.

The scans also showed that in the 960-mile-wide Caloris impact basin, the northern part of its floor is higher than the south, with parts standing higher than its rim. This strange lopsidedness may have resulted from tectonic forces — and is one of the growing number of clues that the planet's surface must have been changing well past its youth.

In the second study, led by David Smith of MIT, researchers used tiny shifts in radio frequency to measure Mercury's gravitational influence as the Messenger spacecraft orbited the planet. Knowing how much gravity was exerted on the spacecraft would help the team understand how dense the planet must be inside — and thus, what material lies within.

That turned out to be trickier than anticipated because the scientists had to tease the planet's gravitational signal out of all the other forces on the spacecraft — including photons from the sun that pushed on it and gravity from the sun that pulled on it.

In the end, the spacecraft orbited hundreds of times before the team had the information it needed.

"I thought we were going to know a lot of what we needed to know after a couple of orbits — and boy, was I naive," said Zuber, who worked on both studies.

A gravitational field can be broken down into its constituent wavelengths — the shorter wavelengths will reveal what's going on in the planet's shallow depths, and the longer wavelengths can help scientists figure out the gravity being exerted by material deeper in the core.

Scientists already knew that Mercury is rich in sulfur at the surface and has a massive iron core — so massive, in fact, that they wondered if Mercury had once been a much larger planet whose outer layers were stripped off, perhaps by a major impact.

Now, by studying the planet’s gravity, they found that thecore is even larger than they thought — from the center, it takes up 83% of Mercury’s radius. (The Earth’s core, by comparison, is a little more than half of the planetary radius.)

Perhaps most oddly of all, there must be a solid layer of iron sulfide lying between Mercury's liquid outer core and its thin mantle.

"That is the most surprising result that they've come up with, because we don't have anything like that in the Earth," said Gerald Schubert, a UCLA planetary physicist who was not involved in the study.

Schubert was quick to add that the iron sulfide theory is based on mathematical modeling rather than on an actual physical sample — but, he added, "if it's real, it has interesting consequences."

Knowing how different from Earth a rocky planet can look on the inside takes off the blinders in our analysis of potentially habitable planets beyond our solar system, Zuber said.

"People are making models of what 'super-Earths' could be like, and all these models are based on interiors of terrestrial planets as we know them," she said. "This gives people a broader range of things that need to be considered for planets around other suns."

Akira Yoshizawa Google Today

Akira Yoshizawa (吉澤 章 Yoshizawa Akira; 14 March 1911 – 14 March 2005) was considered to be the grandmaster of origami. He is credited with raising origami from a craft to a living arts. According to his own estimation made in 1989, he created more than 50,000 models, of which only a few hundred designs were diagrammed in his 18 books. Yoshizawa acted as an international cultural ambassador for Japan throughout his career. In 1983, Japanese emperor Hirohito named him to the Order of the Rising Sun, one of highest honors that can be given to a Japanese citizen.
Early life
Born on March 14, 1911, in Kaminokawa, Japan, to the family of a dairy farmer. When a child, he took pleasure in teaching himself origami. He moved into a factory job in Tokyo when he was 13 years old. His passion for it was rekindled in his early 20s, when he was promoted from factory worker to technical draftsman. His new job was to teach junior employees geometry. Yoshizawa used the traditional art of origami to understand and communicate geometrical problems.
In 1937 he left factory work to pursue origami full-time. During the next 20 years, he lived in total poverty, earning his living by door-to-door selling of tsukudani (a Japanese preserved condiment that is usually made of seaweed). His origami work was creative enough to be included in the 1944 book Origami Shuko, by Isao Honda (本多 功). However it was his work for a 1951 issue of the magazine Asahi Graph that launched his career although, according to another account, his first step on the professional road was a set of 12 zodiac signs commissioned by a magazine in 1954.
In 1954 his first monograph, Atarashi Origami Geijutsu (New Origami Art) was published. In this work he established the Yoshizawa-Randlett system of notation for origami folds which has become the standard for most paperfolders. The publishing of this book helped Yoshizawa out of his poverty. It was followed closely by his founding of the International Origami Centre in Tokyo in 1954, when he was 43.
His first overseas exhibition was organised in 1955 by Felix Tikotin, a Dutch architect and art collector of German-Jewish origin, in the Stedelijk Museum. Yoshizawa lent many of his own origami models to other exhibitions around the world. He would never sell his origami figures, but rather gave them away as gifts to people, and let other groups and organizations borrow them for exhibiting.
In 1956, he re-married. His new wife Kiyo[1] acted as his manager and taught origami alongside him. It was around this time that he became famous worldwide.
In honor of his birthday, Akira Yoshizawa was featured on 14 March 2012 as Google's doodle, 7 years after his death

Technique
Yoshizawa pioneered many techniques, including wet-folding. In this technique the paper is dampened before folding, letting the folder create a much more rounded and sculpted look. This was considered by many to be the paradigm shift of sorts that allowed origami to become an art form, as opposed to a quaint oddity of folk craft.

Later years
In March 1998, Yoshizawa was invited to exhibit his origami, in what still remains the greatest origami exhibition ever staged, in the Louvre museum. He did it so joyfully, and was not at all opposed to having his photo taken with other competing origami artists, whom he used to detest in his earlier years; many of his patterns were diagrammed by his professional rivals, which angered Yoshizawa when he was younger. However, he found that he was no longer so repulsed by rival origami folders, and that, in fact, he now enjoyed their company.
Akira Yoshizawa died on March 14, 2005 in hospital in Ogikubo, of complications of pneumonia, on his 94th birthday.

Solar storms: Five facts you should know

Another solar storm is blasting the Earth. Here's what's going on with today's storm and what you need to know about the potential for future storms.
NASA captured this image of a massive solar flare erupting Tuesday.
(Credit: NASA)

You may be having a typical Thursday, but the Earth is currently being blasted by a wave of radiation from a huge solar flare.
NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center said the solar storm hit the Earth at about 2:45 a.m. PT. The solar storm is one of the strongest in years and could cause disruptions in satellites, affect radio communications in polar areas, and even slightly decrease the efficiency of solar panels.
This solar storm follows a similarly strong one only two months ago. Here's a short primer on what's going on.
First, are these solar storms dangerous?

In general, the physical danger is low and controllable. The biological hazard inherent in solar and geomagnetic storms comes from the exposure to radiation, which is mainly a concern for astronauts and people flying at high altitudes, according to NOAA's ranking of storm severity.
On the other hand, the disruptions that more severe storms can cause have the potential to bring about real damage. Milder storms may disrupt the satellites that handle GPS communications. But the more severe geomagnetic storms can spike the voltage in transmission lines which could damage grid transformers and potentially knock power out. A massive power outage in the province of Quebec in 1989 was blamed on a solar storm.
What's happening with today's storm?
Today's storm is predicted to reach G3, which is a strong level. The solar radiation is at S3, also strong, and there was a strong-level radio blackout. NOAA this morning noted that "so far the orientation of the magnetic field has been opposite of what is needed to cause the strongest storming." Space forecasters will be closely watching this event as they go on for days.

The increased radiation, which collects along the Earth's poles, means that flights will likely be rerouted to avoid the North Pole, as some were earlier this year. Grid operators have also been notified to monitor potential power surges, according to NOAA.
The influx of super hot gases from the sun hits the magnetic field that protects the Earth and causes the waves of energy and particles to flow toward the poles and collide with the atmosphere. This causes fantastic, multi-hour displays known as auroras. These type of events bring out stargazers to watch the stunning green glow caused by the solar flare in northern countries.
What causes them?
The sun is a big ball of burning gas and solar flares are loop-like explosions at the surface. These cause what are called a coronal mass ejection (CME), where a chunk of the sun breaks off from its atmosphere. The biggest flares can be tens of times the size of the Earth. When there is a coronal mass ejection, high-energy particles can travel at over 1,000 miles per second. This solar flare was caused by two CMEs on Tuesday and passed by several NASA spacecraft, acbording to NASA. There were also two CMEs caused by a solar flare on Sunday, NASA said.

San Francisco earthquake rattles Bay Area nerves, but not much else

San Francisco earthquake rattles Bay Area nerves, but not much else

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Two small, back-to-back earthquakes shook San Francisco Bay area residents awake Monday morning but appeared to leave no serious damage or injury.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a magnitude-3.5 quake struck at 5:33 a.m. about eight miles northeast of San Francisco in the city of El Cerrito. It was followed eight seconds later by a magnitude-4.0 temblor, said geophysicist Paul Caruso. The USGS originally reported that the first quake had a magnitude of 2.9.

The shaking was felt within a 60-mile radius, from Santa Rosa in the north to Santa Cruz in the south.

The California Highway Patrol, San Francisco police and El Cerrito police said they didn't receive any immediate reports of injury or damage.

Bay Area commuter trains were briefly delayed after the quake to inspect the tracks.

Seismologists said the quake appeared to occur on the Hayward Fault, a seismically active fault that runs along the eastern San Francisco Bay. A 2003 USGS report said the Hayward Fault had the highest chance - 27 percent - of producing a large earthquake of magnitude-6.7 or higher in the Bay Area within 30 years.

"We know that the Hayward Fault is the really important fault in the Bay Area," USGS seismologist David Schwartz told KGO-TV on Monday. "These earthquakes, these 4's, are just an indication of ongoing activity, ongoing stress on the fault. They do nothing to relieve the likelihood of something larger happening."

Overall, there was a 62 percent probability that the Bay Area would see a large quake by 2032, according to the report.

Bermimpi Bikin Orang Makin Pintar

Ketika tubuh beristirahat, otak manusia tetap aktif.

Nook Tablet: ‘Hands Off’ First Impressions

Tech companies can sometimes be touchy about letting journalists get their hands on brand-new devices. At today’s Barnes & Noble event, representatives demoed working Nook Tablets for the press, but we weren’t allowed to actually handle them ourselves. It’s a common precaution. Amazon did the same thing at its Kindle Fire launch event.

It’s partly about protecting scarce pre-release devices, and partly about protecting the information on them — corporate-level usernames are handy in the wrong hands. But, mostly, manufacturers are interested in managing the product news cycle, from first announcements to final critical reviews.

So I can’t in good conscience call the following a “hands-on” with the new Nook Tablet — and you shouldn’t give full credence to anyone else who promises a “hands-on” evaluation, either. I got to hold and touch the tablet, but not really use it in the way that I would in a solo demo, or researching a full review.

What follows, however, is an extended eyewitness account of what I’ve seen the device do in two separate demo sessions. It’s also a recap of conversations I had with Barnes & Noble staff.

The Nook Tablet is, indeed, very light — lighter than the Nook Color (which is otherwise a near-replica of the Nook Tablet), lighter than a Kindle Fire, and much lighter than an iPad. B&N reps were coy when I asked how they managed to make the device lighter while still extending battery life. They confirmed that the Nook Tablet packs the same battery as the Nook Color, and explained that firmware improvements and better power management at the processor level produce the battery-life gain.

As for the weight reduction, I suspect there’s a materials change in the outer case design, but joked that B&N was able to cut weight just by outfitting the tablet in a slightly lighter shade of gray.

The LCD screen is bright and clear, and handles video playback superbly. It’s 1024 x 600 (just shy of native 720p resolution) and boasts a 169 PPI pixel density. This is the same as the Nook Color, but most of the benefit comes from the Nook Tablet’s laminated screen and extra processing power and memory. In all, the internal hardware provides more than enough firepower to handle streaming HD video. (Network performance and webby plugins remain the real bottleneck to streaming video performance, and, indeed, native video of movie trailers and enhanced e-books performed better than streaming video of a TED talk.)

The combination of improved screen quality and processing power also makes gaming much more compelling on the Nook Tablet. With touchscreens, you want to feel like objects are right at your fingertips (not a millimeter beneath them), and responding instantaneously to your gestures (not a millisecond afterward). At this scale, even rapidly flipping back and forth between pages in a magazine becomes a game.

The Tablet’s 7-inch form factor is also ideal for many games. Playing a game like Angry Birds on a smartphone or iPod touch is an awkward dance of zooming and squinting. And on an iPad, it can be awkward to hold such a large device with one hand while making gestures to slingshot birds with the other. But on a 7-inch tablet with proper hardware inside, gaming feels just right.

In fact, an emphasis on gaming, video and digital comics (a new media category for Barnes & Noble, thanks to a big new partnership with Marvel) suggests to me that the Nook Tablet’s target audience (or one of them, at least) isn’t so much the middle-class career moms who snapped up the first-gen Nook Color, but rather their offspring, who love games, comics and Harry Potter. Indeed, the Nook Tablet is a serious, high-performing device for kids too young to sport a smartphone or iPad, and who don’t plow through enough books to warrant a Nook Simple Touch or plain-vanilla Kindle, but who could benefit from an inexpensive, highly mobile device that can do a little bit of everything.

This, I think, is still Barnes & Noble’s best strategy: Don’t try to go mano a mano with Apple or even Amazon, even if it may be necessary and a little bit fun to point out when and where you have a direct advantage, or think you’re taking a better approach. Instead, pick a handful of key, underserved demographics — whether it’s moms or adolescents or gamers or whomever — and serve the hell out of them. Based on my first impressions, that’s what the Nook Tablet has the potential to do.

Google Logo Today "Marie Curie's 144th Birthday"

AC MILAN VS CATANIA (Life Score) 4-0

Susunan pemain
Milan: Christian Abbiati, Thiago Silva, Daniele Bonera (Mario Yepes 46), Gianluca Zambrotta, Ignazio Abate, Massimo Ambrosini, Urby Emanuelson, Clarence Seedorf (Filipo Inzaghi 79), Alberto Aquilani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robinho (Luca Antonini 81)
